The Premier League title has never been closer. It’s so close that the Reds can nearly touch it, but on the road to immortality there are still tricky obstacles that Klopp’s men need to overcome.
Liverpool have been near-perfect so far this season, with the best defensive record a clear indicator of how far the German has brought the club in such a short amount of time. However, it remains likely that this is the campaign when Klopp will be judged. The club can no longer take being close as an achievement; it needs to be a successful end to the season.
But what are the fixtures that could prove as a potential banana skin? And, how can the Reds ensure that the three points are achieved?
Liverpool vs Chelsea (14th April)
The last time Liverpool was on the brink of something special, they came undone against Chelsea at Anfield. Who could forget that Steven Gerrard slip and Demba Ba goal in a Jose Mourinho defensive masterclass? It is etched into every fan’s memory, and opposing supporters’ are quick to bring the attention back to it, never mind the achievements that came during the career of the former captain.
This is undoubtedly the one game remaining where Klopp will need to get his tactics spot-on and learn from past errors the club have made. It will come off the back of the European tie against Porto in the Champions League at Anfield also. Which means the players will need to re-position their thoughts so that the Premier League form doesn’t slip because of a memorable night at Anfield.
These are the two factors that could upset Liverpool. As long as the focus is there and the players’ play to their full ability; there will be no doubt that a rocking Anfield will leave happy. It is vital that the ascendency isn’t handed to Manchester City at this point.
Newcastle vs Liverpool (4th May)
St James’ Park hasn’t been a happy hunting ground in recent years for the Reds. We haven’t won there for the past four seasons; losing two and drawing two. There stands an excellent chance that this will need to be three points, with City consistently grinding out wins.
The penultimate game of the season isn’t the time to lose focus, and with City hosting Leicester on the same day; it could be the decisive game of the season especially when you consider that the Reds close the season with a home game. Should it go to the wire and the Reds just needing a win to claim the title, the atmosphere generated by the home support at Anfield would be enough to shred any nerves that the players may have.
Wolverhampton Wanderers are the opponents on the final day, and with their focus likely to be on the FA Cup final, it could be a perfect title-deciding fixture, which the Reds will go into as the favourite in the Novibet UK football betting markets. Newcastle, however, isn’t ideal. Rafa Benitez has legendary status at the club but fans’ will be quick to recognise he has a great record against the club, and with Newcastle possibly needing a result to ensure safety; it will be a nervy 90 minutes.
