New Balance have today revealed Liverpool’s official away kit for the 2017/2018 premier league season.
The kit designers – who have taken flak for some of the club’s less traditional away jerseys – have said they want to embrace Liverpool’s tradition this time.
Last month’s launch of the home kit for the 2017/18 campaign revealed a retro style strip – with shades of the kits famously worn by Liverpool’s European Cup winners in Rome in 1977 and 1984.
It was worn for the first time when Liverpool played Middlesbrough in the final game of Liverpool’s Premier League campaign last season.
Having faced criticism in recent years for favouring a lighter colouring of red more reminiscent of Middlesbrough, Liverpool restored the deeper ‘blood red’ of the Bill Shankly era.
The new away kit bears resemblance to the away shirt worn by a young Robbie Fowler and Steve McManaman during the 1995/96 season, and has been met with mixed reactions from supporters.
It is accompanied by a black collar, club badge and sponsor, in what appears to be a modernised version of the shirt worn by the likes of Jason McAteer, Phil Babb, Stan Collymore, John Barnes and Jamie Redknapp.
The new away goalkeeper kit has also been revealed – a dark black and will be worn by Simon Mignolet. Loris Karius and Danny Ward next season.
The second of the new strips for the 2017/2018 campaign will be available to buy online at liverpoolfc.com/store today, and will become available in club stores this Saturday.
