According to Melissa Reddy, Roma are considering a move for Mamadou Sakho as a replacement for Kostas Manolas, who is expected to exit this summer. The Reds will be looking to bank around £30m for the defender, who has no future at Anfield for repeatedly breaking club rules.
Jurgen Klopp is prepared to spend a club record sum to bring in a pedigreed centre-back this summer, with Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk heading a list of targets, which also includes Kalidou Koulibaly of Napoli.
Both the Saints and Napoli have enquired about the former PSG man, which gives Liverpool a strong hand to bring to the negation table. Claude Puel had attempted to secure Sakho on loan in January but ultimately lost out to Crystal Palace, who have since benefited from the temporary deal.
Liverpool have been linked to Southampton centre back Van Dijk for a while, however the interest in Koulibaly is new. The Senegalese has impressed at San Paolo since his arrival in 2014, with a very dominating presence in defence. Like Van Dijk, the 25-year-old is strong in the air, using his height of 6 ft, 5′ to his advantage, and possesses a physical style of play, with tackling one of his strengths. It is clear that the defender could add strength, power and confidence to Liverpool’s backline that Klopp is looking to bring in this summer after a series of disastrous defensive errors over the last few seasons. The Reds’ are undoubtedly lacking defensive stability and Koulibaly could reinforce their defensive area.
