Ben Woodburn created the headlines at the Kirkby Academy this week as the striker continued to make an impact for the U23s.
After impressing for the first-team in pre-season, Woodburn, 16, netted his first goals for Michael Beale’s side as they beat Arsenal 3-1 at the Emirates Stadium.
The Reds opened the scoring in the 13th minute when captain Harry Wilson unselfishly set up his compatriot before Woodburn curled home his and Liverpool’s second before half-time.
Chuba Akpom reduced the deficit with 23 minutes remaining, but Toni Gomes sealed a first win of the season for the Reds with his first goal at U23 level.
Beale included a strong squad, with Lucas Leiva and Andre Wisdom in the starting line-up in addition to youngsters Ovie Ejaria and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
The latter grabbed his opportunity with Connor Randall switching to left-back, with regular defender Sam Hart joining League One side Port Vale on a season-long loan.
After an impressive performance in the 3-1 win, Alexander-Arnold had even more cause for celebration as the full-back, alongside midfielder Herbie Kane, was called up to the England U19s.
The pair will link up with Neil Dewsnip’s squad for their European Championship Qualifiers against the Netherlands and Belgium on 1 and 4 September respectively.
Elsewhere, it was a weekend to forget for the U18s as there 100% record at the start of the Premier League season came to an abrupt end with a 7-0 defeat against title-favourites Manchester City.
