According to the Spanish publication Don Balon, via the Mirror, Barcelona are prepared to offer Liverpool cash plus Ivan Rakitic for Philippe Coutinho this summer.
You wouldn’t be far off the mark if you were to suggest that Philippe Coutinho is Liverpool’s best player. While he has been very poor for his own standards this season, he remains the club’s most talented player. The signing of Sadio Mané from Southampton and the Senegal international’s subsequent form has made Coutinho look rather poor this season but selling the forward would not be wise.
Although Don Balon suggest that Liverpool could receive a cash offer and Ivan Rakitic from Barcelona, I expect and hope that Jürgen Klopp will reject the offer out of hand. Klopp has made it clear since he arrived that he doesn’t want to lose his best players.
And as far as Coutinho is concerned, better players are hard to find for the right price.
Coutinho signed a new deal with Liverpool this season which doesn’t include a buyout clause. This will afford the club the upper hand if negotiations ever reach the point where Barcelona come with an official bid.
With Klopp looking to build a team capable of challenging for trophies, both domestically and in Europe, being able to hold onto his most influential players is of the utmost importance. Coutinho will be entering his prime years as a footballer in the next few years and if Liverpool hold onto him until them, you can only imagine what the club could accomplish.
